The Wood County Airport—Collins Field welcomed civic leaders, aviation experts, and local residents to its grand re-opening celebration on a fresh November morning. The November 8th ceremony marked the completion of the airport runway expansion project which had been under development for multiple years to become a milestone for East Texas regional development.
The event took place under clear skies where Airport Manager John Wisdom, Wood County Judge Kevin White, State Representative Cole Hefner, and Wood County Airport Board of Directors members delivered their statements. The event concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and was honored with a ceremonial fly-over to honor the community’s collective support for aviation development and economic expansion.
A Runway for the Future
The airport now accepts larger corporate and private jets because of its new 5,006-foot runway which extends beyond its previous 4,000-foot length. The project achieved success through dedicated local leadership and ongoing support from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Aviation Division.
Airport Manager John Wisdom explained that the project brings more than construction materials and design work to the airport. “Aircraft help families stay together and get back home,” said Wisdom. The airport board and TxDOT received his deepest appreciation for their dedication to the project. The airport expansion will create substantial economic value for Wood County while attracting new aviation activities and business investments to the region. The airport expansion will bring in additional aviation operations which include business flights and emergency response and flight training services.
The Wood County Airport Reinvestment Zone (WCARZ) has designated the extended runway at Collins Field to attract new aviation businesses and create employment opportunities. The Wood County Economic Development Commission states that the airport functions as a vital economic hub which enables regional businesses to access Texas-wide market opportunities.
County Leadership and Community Vision
The airport board and staff received praise from Wood County Judge Kevin White for their unsung work during the project development. “It goes unsung, but the efforts they make the airport board are tremendous,” said Judge White. The volunteers and leaders who maintained the project through planning and financing and construction phases received special recognition from Judge White. The runway extension represents essential infrastructure which supports the county’s development plans according to Judge White.
The project received support from all parties involved, including Wood County and its cities Mineola and Quitman and state agencies. The project success stems from the successful partnership between local government entities and state agencies. The project represents more than its physical structure because it creates opportunities for business and establishes better connectivity for Wood County’s future development.
The county views Collins Field as its economic growth foundation which extends beyond pilot convenience according to his statements. The project needed extended periods of time and successful teamwork between local entities and state agencies who shared a common goal to enhance Wood County’s transportation network and economic base.
State Support and Local Pride
State Representative Cole Hefner spoke about his experience supporting small community projects during his time in Austin. The representative expressed his pride about supporting this project through funding allocations from Austin. Hefner expressed pride about the project’s success despite being outnumbered by larger cities.
“I am proud to be a part of this project—the money part down in Austin,” said Hefner. “We’re kind of outnumbered by the big cities, but we were able to make that happen. We’re blessed here to have a dedicated board and people that put their time and talents into this. This is unique when you look around the state.”
The attendees showed their appreciation through nods when Hefner praised the board for their dedication to the project. The attendees understood how difficult it was to obtain funding for regional infrastructure development through his words. The representative acknowledged that small towns can achieve major accomplishments through dedicated work, collective effort, and long-term planning, despite facing competition from larger cities.
Economic and Community Impact
The airport expansion of Collins Field enables it to welcome different aircraft types which creates economic advantages for the surrounding area. The airport expansion will draw corporate flights and aviation businesses and improve access to Mineola, Quitman, and Wood County business development.
The airport maintains its essential public functions through medical emergency flights and flight instruction programs for East Texas pilots who will become future aviators. It stands as a community-based facility because of its strategic position between Mineola and Quitman which demonstrates successful regional collaboration.

The November 8th ribbon cutting event brought together officials from Wood County and Mineola and Quitman, along with local business owners and residents. The airport paid tribute to Wayne Collins through a fly-over because he was a World War II pilot and civic leader whose name the airport bears. The entire event displayed the enduring spirit of aviation and public service to which Wayne Collins dedicated his life.
Following the ribbon-cutting event, guests explored the airport facilities while observing the new runway extension. People discussed various possibilities for airport growth including additional hangar facilities, flight training programs, and East Texas charter flight services.
