Collins Field: Wood County’s Airport Gets an Upgrade

By Mike Arcand

Collins Field (KJDD) operates as Wood County Airport, which exists north of Mineola and southwest of Quitman. KJDD operates as a fundamental aviation center for private flight operations, serves as an economic growth center, and represents community pride in Wood County. The airport received its new website at the same time as its ongoing runway development began earlier this year.

Collins Field Vision and Growth

Collins Field became operational in November 1983. The development and sustained improvement of the facility was due to Wayne Collins and his fellow dedicated individuals who converted the airport into a vital economic hub. The airport continues to operate based on the vision of present-day individuals who share similar values with the Wood County Airport Board.

Modern Infrastructure and Website

A 4,000-foot-long asphalt runway with 60-foot width at Collins Field supports safe operations for various aircraft types because it includes medium intensity runway lights (MIRL) and precision approach path indicators (PAPIs) installed at both ends. This year’s construction activities at the airport will expand the runway length by 1,000 feet, which will allow private and corporate jet aircraft to operate from the facility. The project will reach completion soon and a grand opening ceremony with ribbon-cutting festivities will follow.

The airport website redesign during this year provides a new look and feel that brings the same appeal to the website as the updated runway will bring to the airport. The website features a navigational menu that is easy for first time visitors to use—finding everything they need at their fingertips.

From airport amenities and services to travel information (links to LoveWoodCounty.com), news, and events, the website has local information for out-of-town visitors. With its new logo representing both prop and jet aircraft, the website is a true step forward into a new era for the Wood County Airport.

The historical background and operational features of the airport can be accessed on WoodCountyAirport.net.

The automated weather observation system (AWOS-3) provides current weather data at 118.9 MHz through radio or by phone at 903-768-3065 for pilots who use the airport. UNICOM operates at 122.8 MHz to support airport communication. KJDD provides flight training together with aircraft maintenance services, which enables the airport to function as a complete service location for aviators.

A Pillar of the Local Community

The economic development that Collins Field creates for Wood County reaches substantial levels. General aviation airports which operate as KJDD function as essential economic drivers for their respective regional areas, even though they do not provide commercial air services.

The airport functions as a fundamental operational base for vital emergency services. The airport has a fueling station and service center for medical helicopters and serves as a base of operations for emergency air ambulance services to provide emergency patient transport for distant or high-speed medical needs. The airport’s essential healthcare function demonstrates its role in supporting the medical well-being of Wood County citizens.

Community Engagement and Beyond

Planes operating from Collins Field take off and land within an airport facility that actively supports community involvement. The pilots at KJDD airport dedicate their time to charitable activities through ”Angel Flight,” which offers complimentary air transport to medical facilities for people without flight options. Through its philanthropic work, the organization helps patients overcome transportation challenges, which creates an essential support system.

Pilots who support the “Young Eagles” program offer their aircraft to give first-time flights to children as part of an inspiring general aviation introduction program. Through this innovative program, the aviation community experiences the joy of flight while creating opportunities for young people to discover their interest in becoming future pilots and aerospace professionals.

The airport enjoys an excellent location, which enables easy access to the picturesque natural scenery and quaint atmosphere of Wood County. The area consists of piney woodlands and two major lakes—including Lake Fork and Lake Hawkins—which create a perfect setting for outdoor activities. The towns of Mineola, Quitman, and Winnsboro provide historical sites and cultural events alongside local businesses, which attract visitors who use the airport.

Looking Ahead

The Wood County community and leadership—combined with ongoing improvements—will lead Collins Field (KJDD) toward further development. The essential services and economic impact along with community engagement at this airport maintain its vital status as the main aviation center for Wood County. Stay tuned for our ongoing news stories regarding the runway extension. The best is yet to come!
