CrappieFest 2026: A Crappie Weekend the Entire Family Will Love

By Anne Carver

If you associate the word “crappie” with other synonyms to describe something like a bad day at the office or changing a flat tire in the rain, then you’re studying the wrong thesaurus! In this corner of Texas—way over to the East—“crappie” is a good thing! Here, that word refers to a prized speckled panfish!

There are two species of crappie indigenous to Lake Fork; the Pomoxis Nigromculatus and the Promoxis Annularis, but they’re called “black crappie” and “white crappie” to all the good folks around here. This small freshwater fish is a pretty big deal! In fact, every year, thousands of people travel from all over to gather and celebrate at what has become the largest “big fish” crappie event in the nation: CrappieFest! 12 years in the making, this upcoming event is scheduled for March 27 to 29, 2026.  The Sabine River Authority (SRA) is gearing up to transform the Caney Point Recreation Area in Yantis to a hub of activity where the anglers are competitive, the fish are biting, and the atmosphere is electric! The three-day party weekend will be jammed packed with family activities, fishing, food, and of course, fun!

Whether you’re a professional angler with a boat full of electronics or a parent just looking for a way to get the kids outside for a few hours, CrappieFest 2026 is designed to be inclusive, accessible, and genuinely entertaining. It is a weekend where the community of Lake Fork and all of Wood County opens its arms to more than 10,000 visitors, proving that a “crappie” weekend is actually the highest compliment you can pay a family vacation!

The Digital Antidote: Focusing on the Next Generation

In an era where childhood often seems to happen exclusively behind a small glass screen, CrappieFest serves as a deliberate intervention. The event’s leadership has made it clear that the festival is about much more than just weights and measures; it is about preservation and family connection.

Cassandra Gann, Coordinator for CrappieFest, explains the mission behind the event: “CrappieFest’s purpose at its core is to bring families closer and to enjoy time together. You know, life is so busy, and kids are so wrapped up in electronics.”

To facilitate this “unplugging,” the festival offers an irresistible incentive: Youth fish for free on Saturday! This is not merely a hobbyist’s clinic; these children are fishing for “real money” across two age groups, with prizes reaching $1,000 for first place! To ensure they are equipped for the task, every registered child receives a Windrider fishing shirt, a Bobby Garland bait package, and a rod and reel combo from “Mr. Crappie,” Wally Marshall, during the Friday night kickoff. For many, this is the moment they transform from spectators to participants in the great Texas outdoors.

A Schedule Built for Momentum

The festival is not just a long wait for a nibble; it is a carefully choreographed weekend of community events which truly offers something for everyone—whether they have a line in the water or not!

  • Friday, March 27: The gates open at 12:00 noon, welcoming visitors to explore more than 150 vendors, ranging from custom woodwork to jewelry. At 4:00 p.m., the community gathers for a fish fry, ensuring everyone starts the weekend with a full stomach. This is followed by the “Products and Pros” segment, where industry legends share their expertise. The evening concludes with a performance by One Horse Town from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 28: This is the primary tournament day, featuring boat, kayak, and—for the first time—a bank division for those who prefer to keep their feet on solid ground. While the anglers are on Lake Fork, the festival grounds remain alive with pony rides, laser tag, face painting, and a mechanical bull. The evening features a headlining concert by Cody Cannon of Whiskey Myers, starting at 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, March 29: For those with a competitive itch that hasn’t been scratched, an hourly tournament runs from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. With six different hours offering six different chances to win $1,000 for the heaviest fish of that hour, the pace is fast and the tension is high!

 Small Fish, Massive Stakes

The financial incentives at CrappieFest 2026 are enough to make even a seasoned bass pro do a double take. Total cash and prizes for the weekend exceed $100,000, largely thanks to dedicated local partners! For example, Toliver Ford of Mineola has stepped up as a primary sponsor to provide $20,000 in big fish bonuses. This bonus is split: $10,000 is reserved for the biggest three-pound crappie in the adult division, and another $10,000 is available for the youth division.

For the truly ambitious, a $10,000 state record bonus is also on the table! When you combine these bonuses with the standard tournament prizes, the potential payout is staggering. As Cassandra Gann notes, “They could win up to $21,000 for fishing for absolutely free, and we’re honored to be able to do that.” It is a rare opportunity where a child’s afternoon hobby could theoretically fund a significant portion of their future education.

Honoring Our Veterans

Beyond the scales and the prizes, Crappie Fest maintains a deep commitment to the military community. The organizers believe that honoring those who serve is a foundational pillar of the event. Every registered veteran receives a free jig box from Slab Syndicate and entry into a dedicated raffle.

On Saturday at 12:30 p.m., the atmosphere shifts to one of gratitude as the American Legion Post 15 presents the colors. This moment of reflection anchors the festival, reminding everyone that the freedom to enjoy a weekend on the lake is made possible by the sacrifices of others. There is even a specialized “VIP Experience,” where a nominated veteran will get the VIP treatment with a full day of guided fishing with elite pro Eric Cagle, complete with gear and professional mentorship.

The Legend of Lake Fork

“Lake Fork is legendary—not only for bass. It is legendary for crappie as well,” Gann explains. And it provides the perfect backdrop for an event of this scale. Known across the United States for its trophy potential, the lake is the ultimate equalizer for the tournament’s various categories.

The weigh-in itself has been transformed into a theatrical production. With DJ Tooley managing the audio, hanging scales on the main stage, and a red siren that sounds whenever a significant fish is weighed, the event feels more like a high-stakes sporting match than a simple fishing tally. It is this “hype” that keeps the crowd of thousands engaged until the final fish is called.

Whether you are there to try your luck in the new bank division, shop among the 150 vendors, or simply enjoy the Cody Cannon concert, Crappie Fest 2026 is a testament to the community spirit of Yantis and the surrounding Wood County area. It is a weekend designed to ensure that no one leaves without a story to tell—and hopefully, a few fish stories that are actually true!

Don’t Let the Big One Get Away

Registration for all divisions and youth sign-ups are available now on the CrappieFest website. Whether you are chasing the $21,000 youth payday or just a plate of free fried fish on Friday, CrappieFest 2026 promises to be the highlight of the Texas spring.

Pack the tackle box, leave the tablets at home, and we will see you at the scales!
